Low maintenance with exterior and interior window shutters

Window shutters are not just for exterior windows anymore. The versatility and low maintenance of indoor shutters has become a hot trend in custom window coverings.  Durable and timeless in design, interior shutters add rich warmth and make a strong statement in just about any room of the house. They are like fine furniture for your windows.  Their versatility makes them desirable for both traditional and contemporary decors. They are popular due to high resale value, effective insulation, ability to regulate and block light, and their remarkably good looks.

Interior window shutters are sold in two different styles.  Plantation shutters are usually about 1-1/8” thick using wide movable louvers. This style is sometimes referred to as the ultimate window covering. They seldom need a fabric valance or drapery to dress them up and the view from the street is great too. The second available style is the 1-1/4” louver traditional shutter.  The traditional style is ¾” thick and is popular in colonial style homes.  Shutters are available in wood, faux wood, composite wood, and vinyl. Vinyl or faux shutters are especially useful in high-moisture areas and are simple to clean with a damp cloth.  Interior shutters are a wonderful investment to any home.

Exterior shutters will greatly improve the curb appeal your home. They are one of the few improvements that return their full value when it’s time to sell, not to mention the enjoyment you will feel every time you drive up to your house. There are many different options available to fit your budget. The most inexpensive are vinyl shutters that are long lasting, have a 40 year warranty, require very little maintenance and provide a traditional look.  The vinyl shutters are molded and lightweight. Up close they look like a plastic reproduction but they look great if you stand back five feet. They are a low-cost solution to making your home look great. They come in a variety of colors or primed ready to paint. The next choice would be the new composite, mid-priced shutters.  They are a solid-back product with a 5-year warranty, architecturally accurate and available in over 20 colors or primed ready to paint. They won’t rot, warp or split. They are available in a variety of styles and have optional hardware to make them operational.  Composite shutters are very low maintenance and will remain beautiful for years.  The finest and most expensive choice is the true fiberglass/composite shutter which is architecturally designed.  They are low maintenance, have a 20 year warranty and can act as a real storm shutter. Aluminum shutters have become a reasonably priced replacement for wood shutters. They are strong and can meet the most stringent hurricane engineering standards. They are relatively low maintenance and can be powder-coat finished in 100’s of colors.  They have a three year warranty.

The standard of the industry is the wood exterior shutter which is produced in many different styles and woods. Wooden shutters are initially economical to purchase but the overall maintenance needs to be considered.  In many design situations the versatility and design capability of wood makes it the only possible choice.

Whether you add exterior shutters or interior shutters they will add tremendous value and beauty to your home.
