Window or roman shades add a new look to your living space

Window shades can add a whole new dimension to your living space when you’ re not looking to spend a lot of money.  They can add a splash of color to your room or a touch of elegance.  Shades can provide a vital purpose in protecting your furniture and flooring from harsh light and subsequent fading. New window shades are a fraction of the cost of replacing your furniture or flooring.

The name itself tells the purpose of window shades to provide shade from light and heat. At its most basic a shade allows you to block most light and provide complete privacy to an interior space just by pulling the shade down. Many homeowners, however, are interested in providing aesthetic needs as well as their functional needs, and want something more than a basic shade. Adding draperies, blinds and window treatments can dress up a shade, but many times the shades on their own are fancy enough.

On the market today there is a large variety of shades.  The least expensive is your spring loaded vinyl shade. On the downside the mechanism in these shades can break easily. Fabric roller shades come with a more reliable mechanism and come in a vast array of fabrics.    A spring-loaded fabric shade with a side cord and a concealed metal roller at the top is the least expensive of the more durable shades.  The next in line would be the pleated shade which some manufacturers offer additional backing for added energy efficiency.   Then there is cellular shades which can provide privacy and energy savings as well. These shades are constructed not of a single sheet of material but rather many connected chambers, or cells, in a honeycomb pattern. This can significantly reduce heat gain or loss from a window. They can be purchased in light filtering varieties or total light blocking.  Also  they can be mounted to be lowered from the top rather than raised from the bottom, which gives the owner the ability to lower them slightly and be able to see out the top of the window, but still provide a good deal of privacy.  Another plus with the pleated and the cellular type is that they can be made to fit unusually shaped windows such as semi-circle windows.  Next in price are woven wood shades, which are made with matchstick thin pieces of wood, bamboo, reeds or grasses. They provide some sun control and daytime privacy but should be lined for nighttime privacy.

Roman shades are the most expensive type of shade but bring classic elegance to your room.  With the appearance of soft fabric but the ease of shades roman blinds are available in a wide range of fabrics, from sheer to opaque, in colors that are traditional,neutral or textured.  All Roman Shades come with a durable cord lock system as standard and can be ordered with top down, bottom up operation or be custom made to fit arch windows.  They can be flat or made to have cascading folds. When raised the shade forms folds at the top.  Roman Shades will bring a casual elegance and practicality to your room dé cor. Many shades can be motorized so that you can raise or lower them with a remote which is very convenient for two-story rooms.
